About Us

Not all investment property tax depreciation schedules are built the same. They should be—but like many things in the property world, the devil is in the details. At Washington Brown, we take care of every last one.

Established in 1978, Washington Brown is one of Australia’s most experienced and trusted quantity surveying firms.

Each year, we prepare over 13,500 depreciation reports, helping investors unlock more than $1.5 billion in tax savings.

Our Mission:
Helping property investors pay less tax.

We’re on a mission to help property investors pay less tax. By maximising every deduction you’re entitled to – while staying fully ATO-compliant – we make sure your investment works harder for you.

Industry Credentials

When it comes to tax depreciation, experience and credibility matter. Washington Brown is a Registered Tax Agent with the Tax Practitioners Board and a proud member of the Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (AIQS).

All of our depreciation schedules meet ATO requirements, so you can claim with confidence. In over 310,000 reports prepared, not one has been denied by the ATO.

Over the past 45 years, we’ve earned the trust of major developers, thousands of accountants, and more hundreds of thousands of property investors across Australia.

Our Story

Founded in 1978 by Tony Brown, Washington Brown began as a traditional quantity surveying firm, supporting major banks and developers with cost planning and project estimates. In 1993, Tyron Hyde joined as an intern and soon developed a keen interest in property depreciation – a field that would define the company’s future.

Following the ATO’s 1997 ruling (TR 97/25) recognising quantity surveyors as the appropriate professionals to estimate construction costs, Washington Brown expanded into tax depreciation. A pivotal meeting with Meriton’s Harry Triguboff in 1998 helped cement our reputation in the industry.

Over the years, the depreciation side of the business continued to grow. Tyron released his first book, CLAIM IT!, in 2013, followed by KEEP CLAIMING IT! in 2018 after major tax reform in the 2017 Federal Budget changed the rules for claiming on second-hand assets.

Today, Washington Brown partners with over 3,000 accountants, developers, and real estate agents, and helps more than 10,000 property investors annually. We’ve become leaders in technology-enabled inspections, using data-driven tools to prepare reports efficiently and accurately.

In 2024, we launched the Ten with Ty podcast to share expert insights on property investment, tax tips, and industry updates — continuing our mission to help investors maximise their returns.
